Counsellor


The National family Planning Board, a statutory agency of the Ministry of Health is seeking to identify a motivated, results-oriented and qualified professional to fill the position of Counsellor.

The incumbent is responsible to provide professional answering, counseling and referral services in the area of sexual and reproductive health covering interalia, HIV/AIDS and STIs, contraception, menstruation, fertility, infertility, sexuality and abortion in keeping with the goals, philosophy and objectives of the NFPB.

Requirement

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the behavioural sciences preferably with a major in counseling, psychology or other supporting behavioral science courses
  • Three years' experience in general counseling and/or family planning counseling.

 

Technical / Professional Responsibilities

  • Respond to the counselling needs of clients through telephone calls and face to face communication
  • Make referral to appropriate individual/agencies in order to meet the clients needs
  • Serve as a resource person to schools, youth groups, church groups, Parents Teachers Associations by providing information on contraception, relationships, Family Planning and Family Life Education
  • Assist with the preparation of radio programmes related to Family Planning, Family Life Education
  • Act as a resource person on radio programmes related to sexual and reproductive health
  • Distribute educational materials to individuals and agencies on request
  • Assist with exhibitions mounted by the Agency and serves a s a resource person at the exhibitions
  • Organise and conduct rap sessions with teenagers selected by Guidance Counsellors from secondary and high schools within the corporate area
  • Conduct Family life education/family planning lectures and other activities
  • Maintain an efficient recording system to facilitate easy retrieval of information and provide relevant data for the continuous development of technical support to programmes
  • Maintain efficient client profile records to facilitate effective evaluation of services to meet expressed needs on a continuous basis

 

Required Competencies

  • Ability to communicate with people at all levels
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Ability to identify and analyze work related problems and generate innovative or appropriate solutions
  • Ability to use initiative by taking action when necessary without prompting
  • Must have integrity and behave in an ethical manner
  • Excellent Customer Relations skills
  • Thorough knowledge of sexual and reproductive health and family life education
  • Must be a good listener and capable of exercising tact, discretion and sound judgement
